New league tables show what many education commentators have feared would come to pass – large numbers of state schools are struggling to get pupils up to standard in subjects like maths and English. According to the statistics from government school league tables released recently, pupils at the worst-performing schools averaged grades of D or E in the GCSE exams, compared with an average of A* at the best-performing – almost exclusively private – schools. In total, 261 state schools reported average grades to be no higher than C – from last summer’s final exams. The picture for children at the best-performing state school, Colyton Grammar in Devon – and the only state-funded institution to achieve an average of A* across all pupils – was positive. But many schools outside of this elite circle are still finding it difficult to get students up to the required level. Two schools, including St Aldhelm’s Academy in Poole, Dorset, had averages of E+. And around 80 state schools posted an average grade of D following last summer’s exams. Change in the Rankings
The government shook up the rankings system, changing the focus from the proportion of students gaining five grades at A* to C to an average figure across the subjects. From 2016, the rankings in the league tables will be on students’ performance in eight GCSEs, with English and maths ranked double, in order to prevent good schools from “coasting” by on C grades when students should be pushed to do better.
