Before you start criticizing this article for pessimism and stating self-explanatory things, here is what you have to know: it’s meant for good. Way too many students think only about the pros the PhD degree gives and try to ignore a tremendous blow-back they will be experiencing while writing. So, for those who are wearing their pink glasses and are about to commit to a dissertation – here is what it looks like from the inside:
You are not capable of doing enough research. Nope. Even if you read these books. And that article. And another one. And also this short note. This is just not physical possible. No matter what your topic is, there are tons of writings on that particular issue and you’ll have to put up with realization that your research will not be full. Perfectionists hell, that is.
This piece of writing is not even an article to be published in a hardly-ever-read scientific magazine where someone can come cross it and read it just of pure compassion. It is aimed for a limited number of persons who will assess you. Not quite your desired audience, right? Many-many pages cover in writing – in vain.
You will have to sacrifice paragraphs and chapters of your writing. The writing that cost you time and energy and God knows what else. This is the part when it feels the most unfair: you wrote it, your resisted the temptation to hire an essay writer and here is what you have to do it: delete!
Editing and proofreading a paper is not a final touch, it is not even a minor stage, but rather a very solid part of work, which you won’t be able to omit or neglect. It takes days or even weeks, so your sigh of relief after the writing part is finished is quite unjustified. It is a middle.
Citation. Heard about it? Yes, it stinks. As a matter of fact, you have to cite almost everything you write and at some point you forget the source and guess what – right, you have to look it through again to find.
Finally, this is a piece of writing that will last forever. Metaphorically of course, but the feeling will be quite close to that. It is exhausting, and difficult, and boring. So, if you don’t feel ready for this, it’s better not to start than realize the mistake way too late and seek for dissertation help UK.
New league tables show what many education commentators have feared would come to pass – large numbers of state schools are struggling to get pupils up to standard in subjects like maths and English. According to the statistics from government school league tables released recently, pupils at the worst-performing schools averaged grades of D or E in the GCSE exams, compared with an average of A* at the best-performing – almost exclusively private – schools. In total, 261 state schools reported average grades to be no higher than C – from last summer’s final exams. With the news that many schools are still not performing as hoped, what can be done to lift grades and make sure every child leaves school with good passing grades in key subjects?
Under- and Over-Performing
The picture for children at the best-performing state school, Colyton Grammar in Devon – and the only state-funded institution to achieve an average of A* across all pupils – was positive. Similar averages are shown in 8 private schools in London, Guildford, and Manchester. But many schools outside of this elite circle are still finding it difficult to get students up to the required level. Two schools, including St Aldhelm’s Academy in Poole, Dorset, had averages of E+. And around 80 state schools posted an average grade of D following last summer’s exams. Children leaving school with these grades are not given the best start in life. These days, commentators explain, a C- or D grade is just not good enough to compete in the job market. Employers look upon anything below a C as bordering on incompetence, according to Chris McGovern, a former head teacher and chairman of the Campaign for Real Education.
However, taking an average of all the schools, state and private, in England shows the average grade was a C+ – a statistic the government prefers to highlight rather than focusing on the poorly performing schools where pupils barely scraped a D.
Change in the Rankings
The government shook up the rankings system, changing the focus from the proportion of students gaining five grades at A* to C to an average figure across the subjects. From 2016, the rankings in the league tables will be on students’ performance in eight GCSEs, with English and maths ranked double, in order to prevent good schools from “coasting” by on C grades when students should be pushed to do better.
Heading in the Right Direction?
While a C grade is often seen as bordering on poor performance, many children are still struggling to achieve it. Considering this, what more can be done to raise standards in order for more children to leave with the grades that will help them find jobs and also go onto further and higher education? Many education commentators stress that there should be more opportunities for less academically able children to excel, while those who are strong in subjects like maths and English should be pushed harder to achieve the highest grades, whether they are from a state, private, or free school. One scheme introduced by the government in an attempt to bring maths and English grades above C is the Functional Skills concept, where students are given a better chance of passing GCSEs in these subjects or being able to move onto apprenticeships or alternative learning programs – click here for more details on how children can succeed with Functional Skills training. The pressure is still on, given the latest league tables, but at least grades are slowly headed in the right direction.
